Coastal NC has a very diverse inshore fishery. We are fortunate to have the Pamlico Sound to our northeast and the Cape Fear River to our south. The Pamlico Sound is a nursery for redfish, speckled trout, and flounder. We also have a great striped bass fishery in NC. There are so many coastal rivers and creeks along out coast that harbor large numbers of game fish. We have many clear water flats in the New Hanover County area that harbor 100s of redfish year round. The winter is the best time of year to target large schools of redfish in crystal clear water. These fish readily take a soft plastic presented correctly in front of their nose. They will hit topwater year around except during our coldest days.
August and September are our best months to catch old drum in the Pamlico Sound and its tributaries. "Old drum" as they are called are redfish that are 40 pounds or more. Each year they spread out in the Pamlico Sound and spawn. Most are caught using cut mullet and menhaden but they can be taken on artificials as well.
